WASHINGTON (Dec. 29) – Terence P. Stewart has been awarded the Order of Merit by the Ukrainian government. Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States Oleh Shamshur presented the ward at a private ceremony at the Ukrainian embassy December 28.
Stewart, who provided legal counsel to the Ukrainian government over a number of years during that country’s bid to become a member of the World Trade Organization, received the highest award that can be bestowed upon private citizens from other countries, the Order of Merit, 3rd class.
The decree, signed by President Victor Yushchenko on August 18, 2009, cited Stewart, “for significant contribution in strengthening the image of Ukraine on the international arena, popularization of its historical heritage, modern achievements.”
August 18 was the 18th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence from the former Soviet Union.
“It was an honor to be part of Ukraine’s historic transition to membership in the community of trading nations,” said Stewart. “I was pleased to have played even a small role in advancing the aspirations of Ukrainian people for peace and prosperity.”
Stewart is well known among trade practitioners around the world for his expertise on WTO issues. He is the editor of a frequently cited four-volume treatise on The GATT Uruguay Round: A Negotiating History (1986-1992)(Vols. I-III); The End Game (Part I)(Vol. IV) and an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center
